Afrormosia

  • (Alternative to Teak)

  • Hardwood
  • Very durable

Afrormosia (Pericopsis elata), sometimes referred to as African teak, is a durable tropical hardwood prized for its strength, dimensional stability and attractive golden-brown colour, which darkens with age. It has a medium to coarse texture with an interlocked grain and offers excellent resistance to decay, insects and weathering. Despite its hardness, Afrormosia machines and finishes well, making it suitable for high-quality joinery and decorative applications.

In the timber industry, Afrormosia is used for premium interior and exterior joinery, flooring, furniture, cabinetry, veneers and boat building. Its durability and natural resistance to moisture make it particularly well suited to windows, doors and outdoor applications where long service life is required. Because the species is listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), responsible sourcing and certification are important considerations when specifying and using Afrormosia timber.
