Watermills and windmills
Watermills and windmills timber is used in the construction, restoration and maintenance of traditional milling structures, including frames, gearing systems, shafts, wheel components, sails, and internal mechanisms. It is also applied in heritage engineering where historical accuracy and functional restoration are required, ensuring that both water-driven and wind-driven machinery continues to operate effectively while preserving original construction methods.
This application requires timber with exceptional strength, wear resistance and long-term durability, particularly in components exposed to constant movement, moisture and mechanical stress. Species such as European Oak are highly valued for their structural reliability and resistance to decay, making them ideal for heavy framing and water-exposed components. Restoration-grade English Oak is especially important in heritage mill work, allowing accurate replacement of aged structural elements. Hornbeam is widely used for gears and cogs due to its extreme hardness and abrasion resistance, while European Elm provides excellent toughness and interlocking grain structure suited to waterwheel parts. European Larch and Douglas Fir are also used for structural framing and exterior elements where strength, stability and weather resistance are essential. Fruitwood such as Pear is used for the cogs on watermill spur wheels.
