Sports goods timber is used in the manufacture of a wide range of sporting equipment, including bats, oars, racquets, gym apparatus, handles, protective gear components and training equipment. It is also used in both traditional and modern sporting industries where strength, flexibility and reliable performance are required in equipment that is subject to repeated impact, stress and dynamic movement.

This application requires timber with excellent strength-to-weight ratio, shock resistance, durability and, in some cases, flexibility to absorb impact without failure. Species such as Ash (European and American) are widely used for sports handles and equipment due to their outstanding resilience, elasticity and ability to withstand repeated stress. Maple (American) is valued for its hardness and fine grain, making it ideal for baseball bats and precision sporting equipment. Hornbeam and Elm provide tough, shock-resistant properties suited to high impact applications, while Lignum Vitae is traditionally used for specialised high-wear components due to its extreme density and natural self-lubricating qualities.
