This application demands timber with a combination of high strength-to-weight ratio, toughness, durability and, in some cases, resistance to impact, moisture and environmental extremes. Species such as Sitka Spruce are valued for their exceptional strength-to-weight performance, making them suitable for aircraft, glider construction and aerospace-related military uses. European Ash provides excellent shock resistance and flexibility, ideal for handles, equipment components and impact-prone applications. Beech is widely used for its hardness and reliability in manufactured components and fittings, while Afrormosia, Ekki, Teak and Opepe offer outstanding durability and resistance to harsh climates, making them suitable for long-life exterior and naval applications. Lignum Vitae, though less commonly used today, is historically significant for heavy-duty bearings and precision components due to its extreme density and self-lubricating properties.
