This application requires timber with high durability, natural resistance to decay and excellent long-term performance in outdoor and often wet or aggressive environments. Species such as Sweet Chestnut are traditionally used for cleft fencing due to their good durability, ease of splitting and attractive natural weathering characteristics. For more demanding structural and marine applications, Balau, Ekki, Greenheart and Opepe are highly valued for their extreme density and resistance to rot, abrasion and marine borers. European Larch and Oak (English and European) provide strong, reliable alternatives for general fencing and structural posts, offering a balance of toughness, availability and proven long-term outdoor performance.
