This application demands timber with high durability, good dimensional stability and strong resistance to moisture, decay and insect attack, while still allowing for precise machining and finishing. Species such as Iroko and Teak are highly regarded for exterior joinery due to their natural oils and exceptional weather resistance, making them ideal for doors and window frames. European Oak offers excellent strength, stability and long service life, particularly in both modern and restoration contexts, while Douglas Fir (Oregon Pine) and Sapele provide a strong, workable alternative with good durability when properly treated, making them well suited to high-quality exterior carpentry applications. Western Red Cedar is durable and light weight, and used for glass-house construction, bee-hives and roofing shingles.
