This demanding environment requires timber with exceptional strength, natural durability and resistance to rot, decay and insect attack, often alongside good flexibility and shock resistance. Elm and English Oak are the traditional choice for restoration work, due to their proven long-term performance in marine conditions. Species such as Afrormosia and Teak are highly valued for decking and external joinery due to their natural oils and outstanding weather resistance. Greenheart is favoured for heavy-duty structural elements like keels and framing because of its extreme strength and toughness. Douglas Fir (Oregon Pine) is widely used for masts and spars thanks to its excellent strength-to-weight ratio.
